put a piece of your mind here... i figure that if i try this five million times, eventually my comment will get added. this is attempt #4 to let you all know that i've got the madison (nov.14,1997) show on tape for anyone who is interested. hear john fret over the breaking of two strings and singing "take a letter, maria". hear the madison locals screaming for the badger song incessantly. hear the bad opening band "framing amy"..well, no, unfortunately, ben didn't capture them on tape, but just picture a shrunken anthony kiedis and you've got the bassist down pat. and check out my new homepage, won't you? it's at http://members.tripod.com/~tastykakeman/index.html

put a piece of your mind here... still frustrated i missed the mt. goats and a. galbraith(?) in denton tx. simply because i refused to believe anything interesting was happening in denton tx. and didn't look in the local "what's happening and cool" section of the paper. but am here in chicago and will go see mt. goats on 12 of dec. looking forward to it. p.s. if in chicago, look up ajax distribution. he's running out of his apt. on north rockwell, and i found out he'll let you come over to buy if you call ahead, and then you get on the mailing list. also, if in chicago go to vintage vinyl in evanston. way cool record store that specializes in 6ts psych. check out skip spence, july, or kelaidoscope(?), or twink cds. real cool. is anyone recording and like to exchange stuff? if u leave an e mail, i'll get to u. keep up the good work mr. mt. goat. your music is often transcendental in the spirit of mr. whitman. with a yaw, yaw, yaw, over & out. $=death, chris.

put a piece of your mind here... Hello there. It's John. I'm at the Ames Public Library trying to decide whether to go into work early (they want me to, but what feelings of obligation I have toward my workplace are, well, weak) and I checked the comments page and I just wanted to say: 1)I hope the fellow who wanted to see the Denton show checks the Chicago paper a couple of times, because the show is not on the 12th. It's somewhere in between the 4th and the 7th. Not sure which. It's at the Empty Bottle which has a homepage that isn't hard to find. I strongly advise anyone even remotely interested to attend this show. I'll be doing new things. 2)All glories to Jonathan Nall for his continuing excellence in all things. Jaya! Jaya! Jaya Jonny Nall! Do NOT bring up the subject of last night's game between the Raiders and Broncos if you want to say on my good side, John

put a piece of your mind here... Well I am quite excited about seeing John play this Friday. He is appearing at the Ottobar in Baltimore with Alastair and the Iditarod(my bro and future sis in law!) It will be my third MG show but the first for my friends. They have never even heard of the Mountain Goats. They are virgins. So I've taken it upon myself to pound the wonderful music into their skulls for the past couple of weeks. They are beginning to see the light. If only the whole world could (check out any and all Magic Eye Singles related material!)

I intend to drop a load of money if Mr. Darnielle brings tapes and singles for sale, since I have had a devil of a time finding any of them around here. Cheers. ...Oh, and, isn't the first line of "Incuinti-Totzli Days" (I think I got the spelling right) "Hear the PADS beat", as in the pads of the malevolent god-figure's little bunny feet? That's how I hear it anyhow. Anyway, kudos to y'all for this fine website.

Doeas anyone know which "Reading" ("Redding?") they are talking about inthat song? Pennsylvania seems to fit for me, although it could be COnnecticut. Now to find the cd...

put a piece of your mind here... (My actual pick for best 7" should be the Extra Glenns' "Infidelity" which is unfortunately not an available choice.) For some reason my previous message came out as one long line. I wasn't trying to be cute; it was a mistake and I feel just awful about it, really I do. Anyway I'm a little curious after reading that radio interview transcript. John Darnielle makes some pretty disparaging comments about touring in Germany and never goes into the details. I was curious: were the gigs bad? Did the audiences not "get it"? Or is it just that infuriating "foreign artist tax" they slap on everyone who tours there now, which you have to front to them even if you're not liable for it and then supposedly they refund your money later? (My ex-band played there 2 years ago and I'm still waiting for this supposed refund) I ask because a) I know Dirk, who booked and roadied for at least one Mt. Goats tour over there and found him to be a fine fellow, and sincerely hope that there was no falling out between him and JD, plus b) I have an ex-girlfriend in Koeln whom I still am very close to, and she is a total Mt. Goats FIEND so let it be known there are some Germans there who love these songs as much as we do. See you at Terrastock.

put a piece of your mind here... Well, the Terrastock set was fantastic, though way too short. John was in fine form, bantering maniacally with the equally manic fans up front. He even called for requests several times and even though he didn't play any of mine it didn't matter bacause it's so much fun just to yell out Mountain Goats song titles at the top of your lungs anyway: "Maize Stalk Drinking Blood!" "Alpha Negative!" "First Corinthians Chapter 13 Verses 8 Through 10!!" He did some new ones, including "I've Got The Sex", which is as good as everyone's been saying it is. A lively singalong "Itzcuintli-Totzli Days" followed by a request for the Easter Bunny song (the seasonal theme was evident) a painfully poignant "Minnesota", a particularly sweet "Grendel's Mother", a wild "Going To Georgia"...it was hit-packed. Had to catch a bus near the end of Alastair Galbraith's set so I don't know if they played together at the end. But the big news (well, it was news to me) was John told me the songs from all the non-Shrimper tapes and singles will be coming out on CD on Ajax in a series of three, the first one being released in June. Personally I'm pleased; I love putting on a CD and having the first thing I hear be wheel-grind. Anyway, if you're reading this, John, now that you know how many people love your stuff in San Francisco, maybe you'll come out here to play more often?? together at the end.

put a piece of your mind here... To the person who signs his or herself "devout fan," I'd like to say: Hi and thanks for your devotion. This is John Darnielle. The fellow who runs this page does so out of the goodness of his unfathomably generous and enthusiastic heart, so if he only updates it, say, once every year, that's fine by me. He's got his hands full with all kinds of personal business. If I could pay him to do this page full time, then maybe it'd be OK to slap him around some for not updating every time I get an idea, but since his only payment is my ongoing failure to play his requests live, nobody's in any position to bitch him out. put a piece of your mind here... Hey, I have a question.... I just bought a 7" yesterday: the Tropical Depression e.p. split with Furniture Huschle and Thee Mountain Goats. Three great MGs songs...Anti Music Song, Going to Hungary and Earth Air Water Trees. I don't see it listed in the archives here. Is it new or old? It seems like it's from awhile back. The date on it says 1994. Did this just come out? Does anyone know? anyway, I'd just like to say hi, my name's Jesse and yes, it is still raining in Portland.
